Marianville Students Participate in HTSP Program

by Marie Kauna – EMTV Online, Port Moresby

Earlier this year in April, the Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation successfully conducted its ‘Healthy Teens School Program’, or HTSP, in Bubia Lutheran Primary and the Christ the King School in Morobe Province.

The two-day program saw over 1,400 students in grades 6, 7 and 8 plus community locals to participate.

Following the successful workshop, last week another informative HTSP and Cancer Education and Awareness Workshop (CEAW) was conducted at the Taurama Aquatic Centre.

The workshop was conducted by Papua New Guinea Cancer Foundation (PNGCF) in collaboration with the High Performance Sports PNG under the Emerging Talent Scholarship Program.

Two sessions were conducted; one by PNGCF Health Educator, Jacob Oburi and the other Dr Sonia Dadae.

Oburi spoke on making healthy lifestyle choices and ways to reduce the risk of developing cancer while Dr Dadae spoke on cervical & breast cancer, the early signs and symptoms plus the importance of prevention and detection as a way to reducing the risk of developing cancer.

60 students from Marianville Catholic Secondary School in Port Moresby were privileged to participate in the workshop.

PNGCF Programs Manager, Priscilla Napoleon at the opening of the workshop encouraged the participating students to take what they had learned, put into practice plus spread the information to their families and friends. Not only they were educated, they also participated in the question and answer session.

Each was given a fun giveaway school pack that contained stationary items with messages on positive lifestyle choices.

Both programs were sponsored by Kumul Petroleum Holding, Kumul Consolidated Holdings and CEAW by JM Ocean Avenue.

PNGCF thanked the sponsors plus Moore Printing & DHL for their continuous support.
