Lawyer Calls on University to Pay Damages Following Court Order

Lyons Putupen, the principal lawyer of law firm Lyons Putupen and Associate is fighting a long-time legal battle against the University of Papua New Guinea over breach of contract agreement.

Speaking to EMTV News, Mr Putupen said the matter arose after he was denied contract renewal and refused post graduate studies by the University in 2003.

Lyons Putupen’s court battle dates back to 2004. EMTV understands that Putupen signed a contract with UPNG, with an option for renewal for a term of 5 years.

He had taught from 2000 to 2004 at the Law School.

After his contract expired, he was denied contract renewal, and refused post graduate studies overseas by the University while lecturing at the University of Papua New Guinea.

In 2004, Putupen took the matter to the court for breach of contract agreement.

Then in 2016, the National Court, before Justice Ambeng Kandakasi, dismissed the University’s defence and ruled that the damages were to be assessed.
