Eda Ranu carried out a massive disconnection exercise on illegal water connections in the Gordon suburb of Port Moresby today.
This comes after the management announced plans to regulate, and control water usage in the city following an outstanding debt of K3.2 million which comes from unpaid water bills.
According to Eda Ranu Acting General Manager Communications Services, Jonathan Maino, there were over 300 illegal connections in in the Nation’s Capital, which cost the state K3.2 million in total debts for free water usage.
Many of these illegal connections were from 324 Housing Commission properties where tenants freely use water without paying their bills.
This has prompted the management Eda Ranu to survey the area and identify illegal connections. Today a massive disconnection exercise was carried out in four zones of Gordon suburb.
“For Gordon Suburb alone there are 96 illegal connections, 26 consumers have taken ownership or showed up to pay their water bills however, 67 are yet to pay their bills,” Maino added.
Eda Ranu is appealing to water users to pay their overdue bills to avoid water disconnection.
