YOUTHS ORGANIZE GRASSROOTS VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

By: Thelma Allingham

Sports and Music are the two main recreational activities youths of this generation indulge themselves in because it’s entertaining and exciting to them.

Whether it be soccer, rugby, volleyball or a live music concert, wherever there’s an event of such you will find that youths makes up the larger portion of the crowd.

Ward 15 of Wewak Urban LLG is situated right in the heart of Wewak town with a population of almost two thousand people by which, two-third of the populace is made up of young adults.

Following the “senisim tingting, senisim pasin, senism ples” concept initiated by the Wewak District Development Authority and supported by the East Sepik Provincial Government late last year to bring about change in urban and rural communities, some youths of Ward 15, Meni Village in Wewak stepped forward in being advocators of this campaign drive by using sports as their channel of communicating the message to their peers and the younger generation.

Under the leadership of David Batu, Sylvester Naman, Solomon Naraboi and Scholastica Naraboi, the youths facilitated the Grassroots Volleyball Tournament which started on the 15th of this month and will end on the 23rd.

The young advocators deliver awareness messages against social behaviors that are directly affecting young adults and teenagers, especially binge drinking, use of illicit substances and engaging in unprotected sex.

The tournament is set to run for a week with prizes trophies being sponsored by a long time resident of ward 5 who wishes to remain anonymous.
