YOUNG BOUGAINVILLE WOMAN OVERCOMES HARDSHIP TO GRADUATE

A young woman from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville has turned years of hardship and personal struggles into success after graduating from Divine Word University.

Rachael Kiuwou from Siwai District in South Bougainville graduated during the 44th Graduation Ceremony at Divine Word University after completing a Bachelor in Social and Religious Studies.

Her education journey began at Moma Elementary School in the Ramu constituency before she moved to Monoitu Primary School to continue her early education. In 2017, she was selected to attend Tonu High School where she completed her lower secondary studies.

However, her path to graduation was far from easy.

In 2019, while studying in Grade 11, Kiuwou was forced to withdraw from school after suffering a serious illness that nearly claimed her life. Despite the setback, she returned the following year determined to complete her studies.

In 2021, she completed Grade 12 and became the first pioneer student from Tonu Secondary School to further her education at Divine Word University.

Growing up was also difficult for Kiuwou. Her father entered a polygamous marriage and left her mother and siblings, forcing her paternal grandparents to take responsibility for her upbringing.

She credits her grandparents for believing in her potential and supporting her education during difficult times.

To support her schooling, Kiuwou worked as a canteen keeper at Tonu Secondary School from Grade Nine to Grade Twelve, helping raise funds for her school fees while continuing her studies.

Life at university also brought challenges. She lost her TESAS scholarship in her second year due to difficulties adjusting to the online learning environment. With financial support from the St Arnold Janssen Scholarship Fund, she was able to continue her studies.

Despite further setbacks, including losing all her belongings in her final year, Kiuwou remained determined and relied on her strong faith.

Her perseverance has now paid off, with Kiuwou recently shortlisted for the position of Siwai District Community Development Officer.

She says her journey proves that faith, determination, and hard work can overcome even the most difficult challenges.
