The Papua New Guinea Under 19 Cricket team, Garamuts, arrived today from Samoa as champions of the East Asia Pacific Region World Cup qualifying campaign.
Undefeated in their five matches, the Garamuts have qualified for the ICC U19 World Cup in New Zealand in 2018.
They arrived at Jackson’s International Airport this afternoon. With excitement painted on their faces, the Garamuts were welcomed to family, friends and other well wishers.
But it was just 7 months ago that the team set their sights of qualifying for the Under 19 World Cup in New Zealand in January.
The win has surpassed the wildest of their expectations.
They had defeated competition favourites Fiji in their opening match. Then they set on a winning spree when they brought down Vanuatu and hosts Samoa. The finals saw a repeat of the opener where they thrashed the Fijians.
With impressive stats of five wins from five, will be making Captain Vagi Karaho to make a push to the senior squad.
For captain Kila Pala, he is pleased with the results. Now facing the likes of India, Zimbabwe and Australia, Pala said that the level of competition will be very high. However, they are still focussing on the same type of preparations that had gotten them thus far.
The team now breaks camp and return to training over the next few months as they prepare for the World Cup.
