Police in Lae have confirmed two deaths over the independence weekend.
On Sunday morning, a young man from East Sepik was murdered at the Lae Bowling club. Reports state he was chased by a group of men and attacked with bottles and stones. His body was later discovered in a nearby drain.
Meanwhile a similar incident had also happened in the New Block Settlement in the back road area. One man was stabbed to when an argument escalated into violence.
Police say the victim died from wounds sustained after being beaten up by four men.
Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent Anthony Wagambie said both cases were alcohol related and police are now investigating the incidents.
“We call on any other people who were there and witnessed what had happened to come forward to police and give information” Mr. Wagambie said.
Although a large number of people were detained for drunk and disorderly behaviour over the weekend, in Lae were mostly quiet.
