Traffic Officer in Court for Alleged Assault

A Port Moresby policeman is on trial, charged with assaulting a fellow officer and another man.

It is alleged that traffic officer, Francis Awoi, assaulted the men after a minor traffic accident in 2014.

The accused was attached to the 4 Mile Traffic Office in Port Moresby.

The witnesses told the court that in 2014, the accused allegedly assaulted first complainant, George Mulungu, who is also a traffic police officer, and 2nd complainant, Kupe Pereka, following a traffic incident in the office car park.

The court heard that the accused was reversing a vehicle that bumped Pereka’s vehicle. After that a melee erupted between the accused and both complainants, during which they were allegedly assaulted.

The defendant sought to have the charge dismissed however, the complainants’ lawyers objected that the accused have contradicted that Police Act by way of misconduct in office.

The trial continues.
