Timothy Tuna sprinted into the history books on Sunday, breaking Papua New Guinea’s 200-metre national record with a time of 20.75 seconds in Texas, USA.
Running on lane eight at West Texas A&M University, Tuna was overtaken late by Ghana’s James Dadzie but still set a new PNG benchmark. Surpassing the long-standing record held by his father, Takale Tuna, from 1989 to 2009.
Athletics PNG President Tony Green called it a major milestone, stating, “It’s no surprise, considering his recent form.”
Tuna’s recent 100m wind-assisted 10.09 time suggests he may soon challenge Pais Wisil’s national 100m record.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Anis impressed with 10.38 in the 100m and 21.30 in the 200m.
In Australia, Wisil reached the 100m semi-final with 10.42 seconds.
Lakona Gerega threw 63.72m in javelin qualifiers but couldn’t improve in the final.
