Suspected Sorcerers Killed In Ramu

Two children are among six people killed in a sorcery related attack at Sikiko village in Ramu, in the Madang province.

Early Monday, about 500 armed men began hunting and killing suspected sorcerers.

Over 20 other people were injured in the attack. The charred remains of one of the victims was recovered by police hours later.

Gruesome scenes confronted Madang police on Tuesday. Witnesses took them to a headless body of a man, identified as a worker from the Ramu Agri industries. He was one of six people killed.

In the mindless attack, two children aged 3 and 5 were also hacked to death, another victim was decapitated, and another burned after he was killed.

The sickening attack drew high level police attention. Deputy Commissioner, Awan Sete, and Madang’s provincial police commissioner, Sylvester Kalaut, went to scene of the crime yesterday.

This is the worst attack since the last one in Madang over 12 months ago, when several people were killed, and parts of their body eaten in a ritualistic killing.

Meanwhile, 180 suspects have been arrested, and Madang police have sent reinforcements to Ramu.
