Sports Scene – Episode 20, 2014

Well there was disappointment in the NSL final after the match between Hekari and Lae FC had to be called off due to spectator violence.

Taekwondo and the Korean Ambassadors cup was held at the Boroko Salvation Hall in Port Moresby. An initiative of the Embassy of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the tournament featured fighters from all over NCD and the Central Province.

 

A huge weekend with the SP sports Awards ceremony that was held at Crowne plaza on Saturday night. 14 categories of the awards, with about 20 different nominated sporting codes that included Rugby Union, AFL, the special Olympics, and of course athletics. Technical official of the year went to Sarenah Pini of swimming.

 

The next categories went to Community sports initiative of the year, best sports person with a disability and Junior Male and female athlete OTY.

 

SP Sport Award saw some new nominees and first-timers as well as a handful of old heads.

 

Best sport person with a disability went to Rosa Nega for her performance in the special Olympics held in China. Ludwig Peka took out the sports administrator of the year award in soccer for team Morobe.

 

The Hebou Barramundis taking out the team of the year after creating history by beating the Netherlands and exacting revenge over Bermuda. Captain Chris Amini and his deputy Rarua Dikana, were on hand.

 

Sport woman of the year went to Abigail Tere-Apisah. Her proud parents accepting on her behalf.

 

Another proud parent was Toua Kari, whose son Steven was awarded the SP Sports man of the year.

 

The SP Sports awards for 2013 showcased the best sports people that PNG had. And with the Pacific Games coming up, there is no doubt that next year’s Awards will see a lot more nominees.

 

The Korean Ambassadors cup Taekwondo tournament is an initiative of People’s Democratic Republic of Korea. The representatives from the consulate were on hand, and observed how their traditional fighting style was being demonstrated.

 

Nine different clubs took part in the event with weight divisions ranging from the 49 to 87 plus kilo divisions.
