A total of 66 farmers from the Southern Region are currently undertaking a rice farming training, conducted and funded by Trukai industries in partnership with the Pacific Adventist University under the Trukai Industries smart Farmer program.
Aimed at helping farmers to be smart in starting their rice farming business in the country in both theory and practical, the two-week certificate course commenced on Sunday.
Trukai Industries Rice Development Manager, Aina Davis says they are teaching the participants using 4 modules.
She stated that Trukai industries will also buy rice from these farmers but it depends on their criteria regarding the quality of rice.
The corporate Services Director Meck Kuk says it is important to have such partnership at PAU as this is part of their plan to help the community around them.
One of the participants, Pesco Moses Raupuri described the Trukai Smart program as an excellent initiative that encourages Papua New Guineans to grow rice.
