SOLAR LIGHTS UP MADANG HOSPITAL CROSSING

A pedestrian crossing outside Madang Hospital is now brighter and visible, thanks to a community-led initiative that has brought new solar lights to the area.

Danny David Chan, Business Owner of Chan Consulting, noticed that both ends of the crossing were poorly lit, creating challenges for drivers trying to spot patients and pedestrians after hours. Instead of waiting for others to take action, Chan decided to step in and do something himself.

“With both ends of the crossing too dark, it was hard for vehicle drivers to see anyone waiting or standing, so, we stepped in to improve the lighting,” Chan said.

Two single-armed solar lights have now been installed at both ends of the crossing. Although the lights are not positioned directly over the crossing itself, they shine on the waiting and standing areas, allowing drivers to see pedestrians clearly and slow down or stop when needed.

Chan added, “this was done purely to assist the public and our drivers, it’s our home, and if we all work together, we can make positive changes, just like our brother Eugene Wanai has done with the Cleanathon.”

The installation comes after other solar lights in the area were targeted by theft. Razor wire has been placed around the new lights for added protection, following recent thefts along the Madang Cemetery area, where solar lights donated by MCC were stolen.

Chan said the project was not intended to bring attention to himself but rather to make a simple, practical improvement for the community. “We just wanted to help people moving around the hospital area at night, even small actions like this can have a real impact when everyone contributes,” he said.

The initiative highlights how community-driven efforts can create safer, more welcoming public spaces. By combining care, planning, and action, residents can help improve daily life for everyone in the area.
