The Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) today hosted its second workshop with 20 UPNG students to encourage the development of small businesses.
The workshop is aimed to encourage tertiary students to venture into self-employment if they do not secure a formal employment after school.
Acting managing director for SBDC Henry Marasembi said SMEs are the backbone of the country’s economy. He said Papua New Guinea must appreciate and support small businesses.
Mr Marasembi said the workshop is targeting university students now because of their level of education. He explained that tertiary students will bring more knowledge to starting a small business, and that is why SBDC is here to guide them.
Meanwhile Mr Marasembi added starting next year, there will be a new policy and master plan for SMEs to properly coordinate all small businesses in the country.
The workshop will end next week, and will have in-class theory seminars on basic and advanced concepts of starting a small business.
