PRIME MINISTER MARAPE CONGREGULATES ALEX JOHNSTON’S RECORD
Prime Minister James Marape has congratulated National Rugby League star Alex Johnston following his historic achievement of becoming the highest try-scorer in the history of the National Rugby League.
Johnston reached the milestone of 213 career tries, surpassing the long-standing record held by former Australian winger Ken Irvine since 1973.
The historic moment came during Friday night’s NRL match on March 13 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney, where Johnston’s club, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, faced the Sydney Roosters.
Prime Minister Marape said Papua New Guinea celebrates the milestone with great pride, recognizing Johnston’s Papua New Guinean heritage through his mother’s family from Lumi in West Sepik Province.
He said Johnston’s success is a proud moment for Papua New Guinea and reflects the deep connection the country shares with rugby league.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Kumul No. 294 Alex Johnston for this remarkable and historic achievement,” Marape said.
Johnston has also represented the Papua New Guinea national rugby league team, playing 12 Test matches for the PNG Kumuls and proudly wearing the national colours.
Marape said breaking a record that has stood for more than fifty years demonstrates Johnston’s extraordinary skill, dedication and consistency throughout his career.
The Prime Minister added that Johnston’s achievement inspires many Papua New Guineans, especially young players who dream of one day playing rugby league at the highest level.
Marape also acknowledged the congratulatory message delivered by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, noting the strong sporting relationship between Papua New Guinea and Australia.
He said Johnston’s success highlights the growing presence and influence of Pacific Island players in international rugby league.
Prime Minister Marape further noted that Johnston’s achievement comes at a time when Papua New Guinea is preparing for its planned NRL franchise to enter the competition in 2028.
He said role models like Johnston will continue to inspire the next generation of rugby league players across Papua New Guinea and the Pacific region
