Load Shedding In Port Moresby

by Bridgette Komatep – EM TV, Port Moresby

Current maintenance work carried out by PNG Power engineers on a generator at Moitaka, along with two others at Kanudi, have forced the company to carry out loadshedding in Port Moresby.

Engineers are also carrying out maintenance work at the Rouna 4 Hydro Power Station. As a result, there is a shortfall of 42 megawatts and PNG Power can only supply 65.5 megawatts to its customers. Load shedding customers are also assisting with 20 megawatts.

However, the generator at Rouna 4 Hydro power station was restored, thus adding a total of 6 megawatts to the Port Moresby system.

Load shedding is currently on-going and will continue every evening until the generators in the power stations are fully restored.

The current drought in NCD is also affecting water levels at Sirinumu Dam and is subsequently affecting power generation.

PNG Power urges customers to have generators on standby and to use them during the load shedding times. The company apologises for the inconvenience caused.
