PNG Wins Gold

Papua New Guinea has won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, courtesy of our Under 19 Rugby League youngsters who played in the Exhibition Tournament with 8 other countries.

PNG was slotted in Pool B alongside South Africa, England and Canada while Pool A consisted of Australia, Wales and Scotland and Jamaica.

Australia beat Wales in their Pool to set off the grand final match against PNG.

Our youngsters proved they are the best in the Commonwealth when they beat Australia 22 – 8 in the early hours of this morning to claim gold.  Australia took out silver and Wales, the bronze.

The Rugby League Under 19 Nines Exhibition tournament at the Commonwealth Games is a trial run for organisers to include the event in future Commonwealth Games.

The PNG side is coached by Dennis Miall, who is also the PNG Rugby Football League Development Officer based in Lae.
