The new State Owned Enterprise, PNG DataCo Limited, whose board members were sworn in, will meet for their first board meeting today.
The board members include knowledgeable personnel from the telecommunication and ICT sector, including Mahesh Patel, Chairman of Telikom PNG, and Andrew Johnson, Chairman of Bemobile.
As part of the government’s plans to enhance the broadband ICT infrastructure in the country, and to restructure the current state-owned telecommunications network, DataCo Limited’s roles will be to act as a wholesaler of network services across PNG.
According to Minister for State Enterprise, Ben Micah, the entity is charged with consolidating the state’s telecommunication assets, thus rendering Telikom PNG to operate as an owner of access network assets and a retailer of ICT services to retail customer.
The DataCo board will also be charged with setting the wholesale prices for the National Broadband Network when it gets rolled out.
That, according to newly sworn in Chairman Reuben Kautu, should be within the next six months.
Hopes are exceedingly high for DataCo and the NBN to improve services and broadband speeds with the ADSL2+, a data communication technology that enables faster data transition.
