Online Advertising becoming important in doing business

By: Theckla Gunga EMTV, Port Moresby

Online advertising is becoming an important part of doing business, especially for small to medium entrepreneurs.

But it can be more useful if entrepreneurs know how to use different social media platforms to advertise their business. Seeing this as a need, more NGOs and government partners are providing courses for entrepreneurs as a way of introduction to online advertising.

In Port Moresby today (3rd April), at least 20 mothers were part of a workshop that discussed the advantages of online advertising. Conducted at the PNG Women in Business Resource Centre, it was facilitated by existing partnerships with the US Embassy including the PNG-Australian governments.

The workshop aimed at giving these women some understanding on how to create pages on social media that will allow them to advertise the type of products or services they do. But the common challenge most entrepreneurs especially mothers face is the lack of knowledge they have on using the different social media platforms to do online advertising.

In Papua New Guinea, 80 percent of people in the informal sector are women. But they are limited to just selling their products in their communities or in their suburbs.

Therefore such workshops on online advertising can be encouraging for women who wish to expand their business using the digital platform. But as more entrepreneurs tap into the digital market, the risks of being charged high internet rates in Papua New Guinea will be a constant challenge.
