Newmont has reaffirmed its partnership with the National Government to upgrade and seal a 27-kilometre road between Palie and Zuen villages to improve road safety for the community in Lihir , New Ireland Province

Newmont, which operates the Lihir gold mine in New Ireland, recently inspected the road with the National Department of Planning and Monitoring, Internal Revenue Commission and the Department of Works and Highways. The team was led by the Chief Inspector of Mines Lave Michael of the Mineral Resource Authority.
Newmont also presented an update on the project to the New Ireland Provincial Administrator, Richard Andia and senior administration members following the national government’s road inspection in Lihir.
The project’s first phase will prioritise critical river crossings, followed by bridge works at Hurtil and Kalkalel rivers.
The project is part of the 1995 and 2007 Benefit Sharing Lihir Memorandums of Agreement (MOA), signed between the National Government, New Ireland Provincial Government and the Lihir Mining Affected Landowners Association.
The upgrade and sealing of the eastern road was completed by Newmont in 2015. The national government, responsible for upgrading the western road, recently approved funding for the remaining works under its Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme Policy, using credit payments from Lihir.
Once upgraded and sealed, the road will enable quick access to the main commercial hub of Lihir, and Londolovit town.
It will also address safety concerns raised by Chief Mine Inspector Michael about the public use of the Special Mining Lease 6 Road, currently used by locals to access basic goods and services in town.
