The community in Jomba, Newtown, Madang now has a new community market to sell their produced.
This follows the opening of the facility on Monday.
Madang Town Mayor Peter Yalsy Masia said that the market aims to improve local livelihoods and ease the daily struggles for the people.
He acknowledged the cooperation of the Ward Seven community and encouraged them to look after the facility, considering their growing population of nearly 5,000 people.
Mr. Masia also committed to helping establish a police booth near the market to ensure safety and security of the public.
Representing Madang Provincial Police Commander Robert Baim, Senior Constable Bill Rapura emphasized the importance of law and order at the event.
He said that vendors should only operate in approved areas like the new Jomba Newtown Market.
According to Constable Rapura, many informal roadside markets around Madang are not recognized by the Madang Urban Local Level Government and often lead to law-and-order issues.
He said police will work closely with the community to shut down these illegal markets and direct vendors to use the designated facility.
