The Mineral Resource Authority has granted permission to Ramu Nico Limited to resume operation of its Neutralization and Surge tanks at the Basamuk Processing Plant in Madang.
In a media release, MRA stated the permission was given following satisfactory site verifications by mine inspectors on-site who have been monitoring and assessing the situation since the slurry spill last month.
Inspections were also carried out to see the Mine Company compliant with statutory orders given to rectify the defects as a condition to its resumption of operations.
MRA says, Ramu Nico has assured the authority and the state that proper mechanisms will be placed to ensure any stormwater or process water from the plant are captured in retention sumps and are pumped properly into tailing facilities.
Meanwhile, Mining Minister, Johnson Tuke, is expected to make an official address on the matter today.
