MoU signed to turn Brewery waste into animal feed and natural fertilizer

By Annette Kora – EMTV News, Port Moresby

SP Brewery’s improvement of waste management in support of EDAI Towns effort to increase household income of Boera Communities, a Tri-Partite Memorandum of Understanding was signed today between SP Brewery Limited, Boera Holdings Limited and EDAI Town Development.

Boera leaders through their community company, Boera Holdings Limited, are keen to implement various projects for economic empowerment of the community including also sustainable farming. It is a cycle that ultimately will benefit the people of Boera village, converting beer waste into animal feed to supplement protein and fat essentials for the purpose of breeding healthy livestock and providing natural fertilizer for those who tend to their gardens.

How this works is that EDAI Town Development Limited will collect spent grain or beer waste from SP Brewery and distribute to the Boera Community. They will then utilise the waste as animal feed and natural fertilizer through a covert process called Black Soldier Fly Larve. The waste from the BSFL will be used as organic fertilizer for the food gardens which will replace imported animal feed and chemical fertilizers.

The MOU will be in place for 3 years and will see a conversion of waste to feed projects that would otherwise continue to increase strain on limited landfill space and creates a win-win solution for all parties involved.
