Mioks Clawed By Tigers

Lae SNAX Tigers recorded their second win of the season, defeating the Enga Mioks twenty-two points to eighteen yesterday in Lae.

The Lae rugby league ground was packed to capacity as the new-look Mioks side put up a strong challenge against the Tigers.

The Tigers will be on bye, while the Mioks had a mammoth task ahead when they faced Gurias in Lae this weekend.

Both teams have recruited new players this season after losing most of their players to the PNG Hunters, and other franchises.

It was very tough and physical in the first half, as the tigers scored first with a try from Justin Olam, and was converted by Ate Bine Wabo.

Mioks retaliated with a try on the far side by debut player Elvis Loko, with the conversion unsuccessful.

A strong challenge was maintained during the remaining minutes of the first half, with Tigers leading 6 points to 4 into the half time.

The second half was a bit of a one sided affair for the Tigers, when Lock Ismael Balkawa, smashed in through the Mioks defence to score under the uprights.

Mioks were given a penalty for tigers offside, in which Willie Guambo converted for his team, to trail 6 points to 12.

Minutes later, Tigers Jeffery Maino crossed the Mioks try line twice, and gave his team a commanding 22 points to 6 lead.

That didn’t keep the Mioks down; Timothy Lepa coached side maintained strong consistency, until Junior Embia, crossed the Tigers line for a converted try, to trail 12 points to 22.

With about a minute to go before fulltime, Mioks winger Spiro Thomas dived over the Tigers in goal for their final try.

Willie Guambo again converted for them, bringing the score to 18 to 22, when the fulltime siren went on.

In other Digicel cup results from around the country, in Rabaul, the Lahanis were beaten by the Gurias with 36 to 4, in POM, Mendi Muruks ran over champions POM Vipers with 24-20.

And finally, in Mendi, the Hela Wigmen beat the TNA Simbu Lions 10 to 6.
