The Tewai-Siassi District of Morobe Province is putting together a proposal to bring in a number of health officers to the district to conduct more awareness on cancer.
Member for Tewai-Siassi, Dr. Kobby Bomareo, says cancer is a big concern in the country especially for the rural population, and his district is trying to address the issue by carrying out more awareness. The health officers who will be carrying out the awareness will be stationed at the district’s three LLG’s.
Tewai Siassi is made up of three LLG’s and is only accessible by sea and air and the district is serviced by only two hospitals; Etep Rural Hospital and Brown Lutheran Hospital in Finschhafen.
The local MP, who is a medical doctor by profession, says most patients only go to the hospital when they are at the advanced stage.
The Siassi District budgeted fifty-five thousand kina towards supporting the hospitals as people from his district also go there for treatment. For Siassi LLG, a rural hospital will be built to ease the difficulties faced by the people.
A team of officers from the National Department of Health including the standard manager have visited Siassi. The officers are now preparing documents for the local MP, the Health Minister, and National Planning to sign on before work can progress.
