Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister Hon. James Marape, was saddened to learn today about the passing of Tongan Prime Minister, Hon Samuela Akilisi Pohiva.
“On behalf of the Executive Government and People of Papua New Guinea, I convey our heartfelt condolences to the citizens of Tonga and the immediate family of the Late Tongan Prime Minister, Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva.
“I was in Tuvalu for the recent Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and was impressed with Prime Minister Pohiva who was very passionate about issues concerning the Pacific islands.
“The Late Mr Pohiva served as Prime Minister since 2014 and was also the longest serving Member of the Parliament of Tonga since coming into Office in 1987.
“His death is a great loss for the people of Tonga. He will surely be remembered for his leadership in his country. Prime Minister Pohiva sadly passed away on September 12, 2019 after a long fight with kidney disease leaving his wife Neomai and five children.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
