Veronica Buwo says, staff shortage has been an ongoing problem at the children’s ward.
Currently, she is working by herself, assisted only by a community health worker. There are 20 beds at the ward and patient numbers have steadily increased. Approximately 10 patients are treated at the ward daily.
She says, the ward also does not have proper ablution blocks for patients and no there us no specialist equipment.
Malnutrition is the biggest killer at the children’s ward. Three babies die per year. She says, they are working to ensure smooth flow of services to the patients to minimize this problem.
Minister for Community Development in her recent visit paid a courtesy to call to the children’s ward to deliver presents for the mothers and babies.
She says, the similar situation is faced by hospitals throughout the country and the government is working to address this at the national level.
