Manus Disability Concern

by Mickey Kavera – EM TV, Port Moresby

Although the exact number of people living with disability in Manus is not confirmed, it is understood that many of them reside on the outlying islands.

With access into Lorengau town only by sea, they have called on their provincial government to make accessibility easier for them. As a result, many of them have missed out on essential basic services.

Their concern has not gone unheard; Minister for Community Development Delilah Gore has tasked her ministry to assist.

She wants a more inclusive society for all and not for people living with disability to be continuously deprived.

The National Disability Policy needs to be implemented and not left to collect dust, she said.

Callan Services of Manus has received support from the ministry to extend its work to other islands in Manus. They expressed gratitude towards the Minister and her ministry for taking the matters of people living with disability seriously.
