The Central Province Transport Authority reported over 400 offences along the Magi and Hiritano highways over the long Easter weekend.
Officials said offences included overloading, unlicensed drivers, possession of liquor, unregistered vehicles and improper gestures on moving vehicles.
Some PMV owners were charged fines up to K40.
The Central Province Transport Authority was assisted by Police to conduct random road checks along the Maggi and Hiritano highways over the long Easter weekend.
The officers said many commuters are very careless in the way they operate their motor vehicles. They said about 410 offences were recorded. The offences varied.
Overloading, unlicensed drivers, possession of liquor, unregistered vehicle and improper gestures on moving vehicles, were amongst the most common.
These two young men were caught standing on a moving motor vehicle.
They were forced to do push-ups.
Member for Goilala was traveling to his district. Mr. Mona commended the police and CPTA for the random road checks.
He said many residents have abused their privileges in conducting illegal activities along the highways as well.
Meantime, the owner of this PMV transporting students to the Mainohana Catholic Secondary School, yesterday told EMTV News that police have been charging unnecessary fines.
The crew complained that less that 35 passengers were on board, however, they were fined K40.
We questioned CPTA on their complaint, however, the officers said otherwise.
Locals on the other hand suggested that such road checks should be conducted on a regular basis as there were so many illegal activities being conducted along these two highways.
