PNG Ports Corporation Limited (PNG Ports) has welcomed the partnership with Motor Vehicle Insurance Limited (MVIL} to monitor imported vehicles at the ports. This month, MVIL opened a sub-branch within the Motukea Port facility, just outside of Port Moresby. Another one was set up at the Lae International Container Terminal in June. Business Development Manager of PNG Ports, Beverly Nelson, said this partnership would see PNG Ports, MVIL and PNG Customs Services work together to ensure proper monitoring and regulation of imported vehicles and equipment.

This partnership has enabled MVIL to extend its Compulsory Third Party (CTP} insurance coverage in the country, particularly within PNG Ports’ international port facilities where imported vehicles arrive. The initiatives is part of MVIL’s efforts to collaborate with PNG Ports and PNG Customs Services to implement the Government’s policy reform on CTP insurance, which now extends to include uninsured fleet owned and operated by companies in the mining, petroleum, logging and agri-business sectors.

Ms Nelson said MVIL’s presence at the two international port facilities was a positive outcome of the need for SOE’s to strengthen partnerships, close off revenue leakages and deliver effective services. Chief Operations Officer of MVIL, Bafino Koi said MVIL was looking forward to working with PNG Ports and PNG Customs Services on this great partnership to monitor and regulate imports of vehicles and other related equipment. The primary objective of the Motukea office is to inspect all vehicles, mobile equipment and trucks brought into the country.

The inspections will be carried out within the period the cargoes are subject to PNG Customs inspections and before these are removed from the wharf and/ or trans-shipped to other ports. Upon request, vehicles, mobile equipment and trucks destined for resource project sites and those imported by individuals and motor car dealers can also be insured or registered after the inspections at Motukea.
