More than 40 teachers in Lae Secondary School have not been paid this fortnight.
No official explanation has been given by the Morobe Education Division. But it’s understood, it could be due to an administrative mishap.
The teachers were in a meeting this afternoon to decide if they should take strike action. Usually when teachers don’t get paid, it’s because they didn’t submit what’s called a resumption of duty form. It’s a slip of paper, an important one that tells the education department that a teacher is in school and ready to work.
At the start of the term Lae Secondary was the first Secondary school in Morobe to have theirs submitted on the first day. This week, their accounts are still empty.
One said only half his salary was in his account. There has been no official explanation from the Morobe provincial education division. The Principal called the officer in charge to get an explanation. They’re not sure where the problem is.
“Administratively, we’d like the school to run. But if the teachers are unhappy and they can’t feed their families, then I have no control over that,” said Mr. Raymond.
Teachers say, if they don’t get answers by tomorrow, they will stop work. Students will have to stay home.
