Residents of Works compound in Lae, near the market, have called on Lae City Council management to get rid of the pile of rubbish accumulating in the market, near their homes.

As the mounds got higher, the smell of rotting garbage became intense, and is easily flooded over to the residential area once it rains.

EM TV in Lae made attempts to get a response from Lae City Council on why they didn’t collect it, but was unsuccessful.

The wife of an employee of the Department of Works who resides at the Works compound, located at the back of Lae market said, the environment is not safe anymore for her family, especially her grandchildren to live in.

The rubbish was recently moved closer to the compound. It contains wastes from food produce and other debris by the sellers and buyers in the market.

The residents have complained that the mounds of rubbish are also responsible for the smell, which has caused health problems and forced some family members out of their homes.

A employee of Works Department in Lae who also resides at the compound said she feels unsafe and worried when going home after work.

The residents called on the City Council Management to sort out the issue and remove the rubbish responsible for the smell that is disturbing to the homes.
