Komo Communities Drop Weapons and Play Sports

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Communities in Komo have laid down their weapons and have ventured into sports to maintain peace and stop tribal warfare. Rugby league and other ball games are now supported through community support by developer Exxon Mobil.

Chairman of Komo League Morris Edwin says ethnic clashes have hindered human development despite the PNG LNG project.

The current tourney is supported by the developer of the PNG LNG Project and greater awareness by security forces and other state agencies.

A law enforcement officer says there has been a great improvement as tribal enemies enjoy a game. “Men, women, and children are taking part and that is the way forward for peace in the Community,” said Sergeant Mava from the PNG Defense Force.

Women and children are the most affected when tribal fights do happen. Now, women are also involved to bring the community together for the better. The games are played at the Komo Station every weekend.
