Juffa On Asylum Seeker Detention Centre

Northern Governor, Gary Juffa, has called on the government to scrap the Manus Asylum Seeker Detention Centre.

Governor Juffa described the centre as an illegal structure that has done nothing, but only disrepute the country with continuous negative media publicity in the international front.

He asked that Australia consider its international obligation as a signatory to the UN Convention on Refugees, and process the Asylum Seekers in Australia, rather than subcontracting it to other countries.

Governor Juffa made these remarks after watching ABC’s 4 Corner’s Report on the recent riot at the centre. He expressed grave concern that PNG continued to be portrayed poorly by the international media.

The Governor has called on the O’Neill government, to scrap the centre as it is attracting negative publicity and portraying PNG as a violent country with brutally violent people. He said the reports fail to discuss any of the positives of PNG, according to foreign press, all is bad in PNG.

He maintained that this is untrue and unfair on our country, and our people and wants immediate action by the government.
