January 2020 fixed for commencement of UBS COI

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) Loan announced that while it is able to sit today as scheduled, it did so without the counsel assisting the Commission and Solicitors supporting the Counsel.

The unavailability of counsel is due to late advice received by the Commission, on the 5th of November 2019, that the Solicitor General has not responded to his request for assistance to obtain copies of Practicing Certificates from overseas Counsels.

The Solicitor’s unavailability is because of the delay in a decision to be made by the Board of National Procurement on when it will sit to complete its report and recommendation.

Chairman of the Commission, Sir Salamo Injia said while their unavailability will not pose any major difficulty, the commission will deal with Preparatory work to sit in early 2020.

It has fixed 27 January 2020 as the date for the return of Summonese to appear before the commission.

This inquiry is into the procedures followed by the PNG government in obtaining the UBS Loan in 2014.
