INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF RED CROSS CONTINUE HUMANITARIAN WORK

Non-Government organizations continue to serve the people in remote areas with various issues affecting the society ranging from education, health and infrastructure, trying to solve conflicts, as well as aid assistance to disaster affected areas to ensure people leave happily.

The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) is one such organization that was established in PNG since 2006 to serve humanity.

The head of mission ICRC in PNG Dominik Urban highlighted some of the activities or services they delivered to the people.

“We are working in countries which are affected by war, situation of violence or natural disasters. We have professional expertise worldwide. We are mandated to address issues and conflict or natural disasters, therefore we came to Papua New Guinea,” Urban said.

The head of mission was here since 2019 and has a lot of fond memories of serving rural people in the country.

Urban said working in PNG has a lot of challenges with rugged terrain, natural disasters, conflicts and others issues that require immediate response.

“When we go to highlands and respond to humanitarian impact of community or tribal fight, there are still security issues” Urban said.

“We have to discuss with the communities and explain to them what we do and not to be at the risk of security” he added.

ICRC Head of Mission in PNG said tribal fights will affect the peace and daily living so he urged people to solve their conflict through peaceful means.

He will be leaving PNG to serve in other countries under ICRC but states that PNG is a good place and he hopes to come back in the future.

Urban added that the ICRC staff in PNG will continue to serve the people of PNG.
