Inaugural Early Childhood Development Symposium Hosted

The Education Department together with PNG Early Childhood Development Alliance today hosted the inaugural Early Childhood Development Symposium.

The two – day event brought together government entities such as the Department of Community Development and the National Department of Education, key development partners and various stakeholders to discuss issues affecting Early Childhood Development (ECD).

The symposium also gives an opportunity for all stakeholders to better understand the role of Early Childhood Development.

UNICEF, ECD Advisor Pablo Stansbery in his key note address pointed out some importance of Early Childhood Development in PNG.

He said there is a need for more investment in Early Childhood Development.

“We have infrastructures in PNG, but Partners must work together to come up with better strategies.” UNICEF, ECD Advisor Pablo Stansbery

He added that the education department has already taken steps into establishing Early Childhood Education, through community based Pre – School.

He also highlighted the need for equal distribution of resources so that all children can benefit.

“When we talk about distribution of resources, some children need additional support so that they can watch the game of life in full technicality.” Stansbery said.

Autonomous Bougainville Government Deputy Education Secretary Mary Remi also shared some experiences of ECD in Bougainville.

She said, the ABG has taken steps into establishing Early Childhood Education, and she is confident better recommendations can be made through this symposium, to improve ECD in PNG.

The symposium also gives an opportunity for all stakeholders to better understand the role of Early Childhood Development.

The first day of the symposium today also featured a number of information stalls and exhibits by members of the PNG ECD Alliance.

The event will end tomorrow.
