Hunters’ Look to reclaim the Kokoda Cup

By Huxley Lovai

The SP PNG Hunters will have a burning desire to regain Kokoda Cup when they take on Intrust Super Cup heavyweights Burleigh Bears in the annual Anzac Day showdown between the teams.

The Hunters haven’t held the Kokoda Cup since 2017, and will look to turn the tables on the reigning premiers at Pizzey Park on Sunday.

The Hunters’ will be looking to reclaim the trophy after almost four years.

The previous two clashes for the Cup have been disappointing for the team, with Burleigh coming out victors 34-18 in 2018, before storming to a thumping over the Hunters 56-4 two years ago.

But with the Hunters’ winning stride so far, this weekend’s match will be a thriller to watch.

Hunters’ are in third place with three consecutive wins under their belt, while the reigning premiers Burleigh Bears are in 12th place with a disappointing season so far with one wins out of 4 matches.

Coach Matthew Church is yet to make a decision on hooker Wartovo Puara Jnr who is recovering from an ankle injury sustain in last week’s match.

If cleared to play, Puara will make his 115th appearance for Hunters making him the most caped player in the squad.
