Coffee farmers in Hengenofi district are anticipating the coming harvest amidst road improvements in their area.
It comes after many years of road neglect in the area. Fientina coffee farmers have struggled to participate in the Eastern Highlands coffee market.
A Coffee Farmer says road improvements will give them more opportunities in the coffee market. Though work has started on the Fientina road, locals still remember the distance they walked in the past.
Steven Sero from Kuana begins walking early in the morning to reach Hengenofi station. “We wake at 3.a.m to walk over 30 kilometers’ to get to the nearest road,” he says.
Like many other communities in the Eastern Highlands, those who live along the road are also coffee farmers. For the worst part of the last 10 years, bringing their coffee to town has been the real problem.
It has affected their participation in the Eastern Highlands coffee centered economy. The road maintenance is an initiative by the district administration.
Using machinery bought from DSIP funds, two major road, Tebeka and Kesuaka have been fixed.
