Gelu Clears Side on Grand Chief’s Eligibility

By Vasinatta Yama, EM TV – Port Moresby

Registrar of political parties, Dr. Alphonse Gelu, today clarified that the headline in a daily newspaper today is misleading and misquoting.

The report concerns Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare’s eligibility to be a candidate for the position of Prime Minister.

Dr. Gelu denied commenting on the matter at hand.

The report states that Gelu told the paper that Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare is not eligible to be a candidate for the Prime Minister’s post following a vote of no confidence.

However, Dr Gelu denied that this did not come out from his mouth.

He said the registry has no say in who should become Prime Minister, as they are an independent body under the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Dr. Gelu said the registry has not received any legal documents from National Alliance Party or from the Grand Chief on his resignation from the party.

He said the announcement was from the media, and so the registry would continue to maintain that Sir Michael is a member of the party.

Dr. Gelu stated that the process for Sir Michael’s switch would not be affected if he contests the Prime Minister’s post.
