Fast population growth strains PNG’s Economy

The Health and Population Sectoral Committee says PNG’s fast population growth is putting a huge strain on the economy.

And at the forefront taking the strain are education, health care, infrastructures and employment opportunities.

The last National Census has put the population figure at 7 million and based on current trends, the number of people in PNG will reach 11 million by 2050.

The committee now wants population and development to be integrated, to give it a holistic approach, and not treated as separate issues.

The committee has met with National Planning Minister Charles Abel on this.
