Youths from the notorious Erima in Port Moresby are stepping up through a community initiative to curb law and order issues within the area.
The initiative was launched late last Friday where young men around Mambu area gathered and decided to set up a neighborhood watch to address petty crime in the area.
Youth leaders Ambane Gabriel and Jessie Michael said they are doing this following the growing number of people moving into the area to rent properties which in turn helps the communities.
Gabriel said they will set up stations in various locations from the drive in from the Parliament haus, around the roundabout towards wildlife and within Mambu area into the settlements.
He said this will go on as a voluntary effort to address the issue of bilum or bag snatching and other petty crime that is common in the area.
Michael also added that the initiative has received community backing as well as support from Leon Hardware that operates in the area.
“Working together with the youths, we want to take ownership of our communities,” Michael said.
“We are pushing forward with this initiative with the community backing to make our community safe. I want to thank the youths for taking ownership in this effort to address petty crimes in the area.”
The program will go on with a rotational shift where the young men in the area will have turns to watch out for their communities.
They are also working on getting the Gordon’s police involved so whenever a culprit is caught, he or she will be handed over to police for formal arrest and prosecution.
