The Enga Provincial Government wants a new Special Mining Lease (SML) for the Porgera Mine and not a renewed one. This announcement was made today during a press conference by Enga Governor, Sir Peter Ipatas.
The Porgera Mine is the first mining project that has come to the end of its Special Mining Lease (SML). It is also the first to have a Mining Development Contract.
During the press conference today, the Governor said the mine has contributed significantly to the nation as well as to the people of Porgera. Sir Ipatas said there will be a Wardens Hearing tomorrow in Porgera and the main agenda of the meeting will be about the end of the SML and the way forward.
He said back in the 1980’s the people of Porgera did not fully understand the terms and conditions when they signed the papers but this time it will be different.
The Governor has urged Barrick and the State to respect whatever decisions the people of Porgera have to make.
