Opposition leader, Don Polye, says the Electoral Commission is behind schedule to run the 2017 National Elections.
Polye said the Electoral Commissioner must ensure the choice of electing a leader is done democratically. He expressed few of his concerns yesterday in a news conference in Port Moresby.
The Opposition leader says, the Common Roll Update is behind schedule.
According to Polye the Common Roll must be prepared 3months prior to polling dates.
“I call on Mr Gamato to be transparent, responsible and effective in doing the updating”, said Polye.
However in a recent interview with EMTV, Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato said the Common Roll has progressed with most provinces entering data collection before finalising.
Another issue the Opposition leader was concerned about is the printing of ballot papers.
The Opposition alleged that there are rumors of the ballot papers being printed outside the country.
“Why print the most important paper outside PNG”? said Polye.
“This is for the first time since Independence will we see ballot papers which are very important legal documents printed outside of the country with no good reason”, added Polye.
“I argue, criticize and condemn this act of printing legal papers overseas when we have capability in the country. Since independence, the government printing office has been printing all the ballot papers”.
