CYCLONE MAILA WEAKENS; GOVERNMENT READY TO PROVIDE RELIEF
Authorities have confirmed that Tropical Cyclone Maila has weakened, as the National Government announced its readiness to provide relief to affected communities.
The Papua New Guinea National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed this morning, Sunday, April 12, 2026, that Cyclone Maila has been downgraded to an ex-tropical cyclone.
This follows a week of harsh weather conditions, during which many coastal communities in the New Guinea Islands region and parts of Milne Bay Province were affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila, now classified as an ex-tropical cyclone.
Despite the downgrade, the NWS has warned that strong winds are expected to continue over the next couple of days.
Gale wind warning was also issued to people living in Manus, New Island, East Sepik and West Sepik provinces.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister James Marape announced that the National Government stands ready to provide swift assistance to affected communities across the country, working in partnership with local disaster officers in impacted provinces.
“The government stands ready to work with district authorities, LLGs, provincial governments, and the Autonomous Bougainville Government,” Marape said.
He added that international partners have also reached out to support the national government in delivering necessary relief supplies to affected communities.
Affected communities are urged to contact their local authorities to help fast-track the delivery of assistance.
