Constitutional Law Reform Committee In NIP

The Constitutional and Law Reform Commission Team arrived in New Ireland Province yesterday, and were welcomed by New Ireland Governor, Sir Julius Chan and his administration.

The CLRC Team will spend 7days in the province to acquire New Ireland’s perspective on the review of the Organic Law on Provincial, and Local Level Governments.

Governor Chan said with New Ireland’s Autonomy initiative, it will be vital to gauge people’s perspectives with respect to autonomy.

Sir Julius presented copies of the draft Constitution Amendment Law, the Organic Law on the Autonomous Government of New Ireland, the New Ireland Autonomy Model and copies of the 22 Legislations passed and gazetted by the Provincial Assembly.

Chairman of the Autonomy Committee, Sir Noel Levi, outlined in detail the groundwork that has already been laid for New Irelands’ quest for Autonomy, and that now is the time for the National Government to trial provincial autonomy, and that New Ireland is the ideal place to do so. The visit will end with public forums in Namatanai and Kavieng town.
