An armed robbery was disrupted by members of the community and police yesterday morning, March 4th at Kamkumung, Lae, Morobe Province. At eleven o’clock in the morning, five men attempted to rob a locally owned timber business pretending to be customers.
Three men waited outside whilst two others armed with homemade guns went into the sales office and held up a lone female worker. Police reports stated that the worker started screaming, alerting other staff members. They managed to apprehend one of the suspects with his homemade gun, before flagging down a police vehicle to report the incident. Two police units were alerted and went on foot to search for the suspects however, the four men escaped into the nearby blocks.
Lae Metropolitan Commander, Anthony Wagambie Jr, said the identity of the other four suspects are known to Omili Police and follow-up’s will be made.
“The suspect apprehended by the public… will be formally arrested and charged by CID for the offence committed.”
