Under the governments Medium Development Term Plan 4, the economy is expected to be at K200 Billion per year in 2030 to which the agriculture sector will contribute K30 billion to the economy per year.
Department of Agriculture and Livestock Secretary, Dr. Sergie Bang revealed this at the Food and Agriculture Organization 37th Session of Asia Pacific Regional Conference PNG Country Consultation, yesterday in Port Moresby.
Secretary Bang said each commodity in the subsectors of agriculture will contribute to the K30 billion target set by the government.
He added that Cash crops will contribute through the export of their produce in the global market while the Livestock Development Corporation and Fresh Produce Agency have K2 billion targets each that will be achieved through the Internal Food Security production.
Secretary Bang challenged the FAO to look into internal food crop production under PNG’s ever changing climate, the use of farming mechanism, large area commercial production, and the use of refrigerator containers to move food from the highlands to coastal areas and vice versa.
“The Sustainable production under our climate changing environment and moving of produce through a supply chain will help our country to gain a level of food security” he said.
Dr. Bang applauded FAO on their technical ability in delivering up to date information over 10 years of operation in Papua New Guinea.
