The Acting Managing Director for National Airport Corporation (NAC), Joseph Kintau announced his resignation yesterday in a media conference due to leadership and management issues that has been ongoing in NAC over the past ten years.
Mr Kintau was appointed as Acting Managing Director for NAC following Rex Kiponge’s termination. Kintau was appointed by the Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation Walter Schnaubelt for three months consistent with powers under section 147G of Civil Aviation Act 2000.
While acting on this position, Kintau noticed that NAC has leadership and management issues that have eaten away normal sense of organizational and leadership accountability hence prompted his resignation.
He clarified that the problem is not about the operations of NAC, nor the staff or the systems. The problem is with the governance and exercise of leadership accountability at political, board and management level. This instability poses a threat to the safety and security of the citizens and the travelling public.
“Number one priority of leadership (CEO or Manager) in any aviation industry is the safety of the travelling public and that must not be compromised at any time. When safety is compromised then there is a big responsibility in terms of accountable for life. It will be a failure if we don’t consider this,” Kintau said.
“This instability is not because of operations, staff or lack of expertise. It is because of leadership issues both at political and board level.”
Mr Kintau highlighted that this ten or more years of instability has been at the expense of the people, the staff and the industry.
He added that, the future of NAC is great, only if the political, board and management work together in the interest of NAC and the country.
