Secretary for the Department of Mineral Policy and Geohazard Management, Shadrach Himata, is disappointed over the front-page newspaper article on Tuesday 15th April 2014, concerning recent earthquake activity in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
He says, the article mistakenly stated that, three strong earthquakes occurred beneath Buin in southern Autonomous Region of Bougainville, on Friday 11th and Sunday 13th April.
Mr Himata said the earthquake occurred under the North-East of the Solomon Sea and not under Buin as reported.
Secretary Himata is advising media agencies to check all earthquake and tsunami reports with the department prior to putting out information, which could have consequences on the public.
Secretary Himata says earthquakes and tsunamis cannot be predicted. “There is no way of knowing when these phenomena will strike.
“Generally, it is unnecessarily disruptive, to move out of homes or to higher ground on the strength of rumors of earthquakes, or tsunamis therefore, the public is advised to always seek reliable information and act cautiously”, he added.
Meanwhile only one casualty has been confirmed with damages of infrastructure in the southern AROB.
